As the final quarter of 2024 approaches, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the goals we set at the beginning of the year. Whether you are looking to achieve personal milestones, hit professional targets, or make significant life changes, the last quarter is a good time to check on whether those goals are still relevant and which ones you would like to finish the year strong with.

How did some people reach their goals?

  • Use a tracking tool and alarm for reminders

  • Stay accountable to a family member or friend

  • Self-reward when milestones are achieved

Why did others not reach their goals?

  • Life happened

  • Social media or gaming or Netflix got in the way of sleeping by a certain time

  • Want to work less but end up covering other people’s load

Here are seven tips to help you stick to your goals and forge better ones in 2025.

1. Reevaluate and Refine Your Goals

The first step in sticking to your goals is to reevaluate them. Are the goals you set at the beginning of the year still relevant? Circumstances change, and it's important to adjust your goals to reflect your current situation. Refine your objectives to make them more realistic and achievable in the remaining time. Break down large goals into smaller, more manageable tasks that can be completed by the end of the year.

2. Create a Detailed Action Plan

Once you have refined your goals, it's time to create a detailed action plan. Outline the specific steps you need to take to achieve each goal. Set deadlines for each task, and prioritise the most important or time-sensitive ones. A well-structured plan will keep you organised and focused, reducing procrastination.

3. Challenge and Experiment

Challenges and experiments are good ways to find out what works for you. For example, how one colleague always leaves the office on time is to clear all important work by 4pm, then the last two hours for any other stuff and prioritising things for the next day. Another colleague informed other teammates upfront that she needs to leave to catch the bus and cross the borders which may or may not work depending on how understanding your colleagues are. Some colleagues schedule gym time in the evenings while others need to fetch their children from school. Another colleague challenged the whole team to start cooking their own meals for lunch and it somehow encouraged a few of them to bring food for weeks and still ongoing.

If one of your goals is to save money, try a "No-Spend Month" challenge. For one entire month, commit to only spending money on essentials like groceries, bills, and transportation, while cutting out other non-essential purchases. For instance, no new clothes and no impulse buys. Instead, focus on using what you already have. This challenge not only helps you save a significant amount of money in a short period but also makes you more aware of your spending habits, helping you identify areas where you can cut back in the long term.

These can become habits which are powerful tools in achieving long-term goals. Identify the daily or weekly habits that will bring you closer to your objectives. Whether it's dedicating 30 minutes a day to exercise, setting aside time for skill development, or keeping your phone out of sight during meal times, consistent habits can lead to significant achievements over time.

4. Stay Accountable

Accountability is key to staying on track with your goals. Share your goals with a friend, family member, or mentor who can provide support and encouragement. Regularly updating someone on your progress can motivate you to stay committed. Additionally, consider joining a group or community of like-minded individuals who share similar goals. The sense of camaraderie and shared purpose can be incredibly motivating.

5. Focus on Time Management

Effective time management is vital in the final stretch of the year. Evaluate how you spend your time each day and make adjustments to prioritise activities that align with your goals. Avoid distractions like social media scrolling or checking in on emails during holidays by setting clear boundaries, and consider using tools like calendars or to-do lists to stay organised.

6. Celebrate Small Wins

As you work towards your goals, take time to celebrate the small victories along the way. Rewarding yourself for the progress you make, no matter how small, can boost your motivation and keep you energised. Celebrations can be as simple as treating yourself to something you enjoy or taking a moment to reflect on how far you've come.

7. Stay Positive

Challenges and setbacks are inevitable when working towards significant goals. The key is to remain resilient and adaptable. When faced with obstacles, view them as opportunities to learn and grow. Adjust your action plan if necessary, but don't lose sight of your end goal. It's not about perfection, but progress.

Maintaining a positive mindset is essential too. Stay focused on what you can control and avoid dwelling too long on past mistakes or missed opportunities. Keep perspective by remembering why you set your goals in the first place and the benefits of achieving them. A positive attitude will help you stay motivated, even when the going gets tough.

Review and Reflect

Lastly, make it a habit to review and reflect on your progress regularly. Set aside time each week to assess what you've accomplished, identify areas for improvement, and make any necessary adjustments to your plan. Regular reflection ensures that you stay on track and remain aligned with your overall goals.

Sticking to your goals in the last quarter of 2024 requires focus, discipline, and a willingness to adapt. By refining your objectives, creating a detailed action plan, and leveraging habits, accountability, and time management, you can make significant progress and end the year on a high note. Remember to stay positive, celebrate small wins, experiment and adjust as you work towards your goals. With determination and dedication, you can achieve great things in the final months of 2024 and beyond.
